Official Racer Rules
#

Weight
#

Weight will not be over 5.010 ounces by official scale. The scale used is calibrated at each race, and racers can request the official to recalibrate, if needed. Outdoor races sometimes cause variances, due to wind and humidity. So, be prepared to add or remove weight at check-in if very close.

Recommended scale: American Weigh Scales LB-501 — this is the same model used at official weigh-ins.

Dimensions
#

  • Maximum 2.75 inches wide and 7 inches long (including wheels and axles)
  • Minimum 1.75 inches between wheels
  • Minimum 3/8" bottom clearance from the track surface

Wheels & Axles
#

  • Standard derby plastic wheels with nails or axles only
  • Original wheelbase of 4 5/16 inches (±3/16" variance allowed)
  • No bearings, washers, bushings, or springs permitted
  • Only dry lubricants like graphite are allowed

General
#

Officials may require modifications if cars violate the “spirit” of traditional pinewood derby racing. Vintage vehicles may receive exceptions at official discretion.

Inspection
#

A 3D-printable inspection box is available via TinkerCAD to help verify your car meets measurement requirements before race day.

Need a Car Kit?
#

Kits can be found at multiple locations around town, as well as online. The local Scout shop always has their high-quality kits available, as well as weights and other accessories. The kits at the Scout shops are the most authentic, and come with everything you need, minus weights, for less than $8. You can also find kits year-round at the local hobby and arts/crafts stores like Hobby Lobby or Michael’s.

Outlaw Racer Division
#

The Outlaw category allows modified vehicles with minimal restrictions. The sole requirement:

Cars cannot damage the track, electronics, spectators, or other vehicles.

Officials must approve all modifications during check-in. If you can dream it, you can probably race it — just don’t break anything.
